Great coffee starts with fresh beans — and how you store them makes a real difference. Follow these four simple rules to keep every bag tasting its best.
1. Keep it airtight
Oxygen is coffee's enemy. Store your beans in an airtight container to slow down the staling that begins the moment coffee meets air.
2. Cool, dark and dry
Heat, light and moisture all speed up flavour loss. Keep your coffee in a cupboard away from the oven, kettle and direct sunlight. Despite the popular myth, avoid the fridge or freezer for coffee you're drinking day to day — condensation does more harm than good.
3. Buy whole beans and grind fresh
Ground coffee stales far faster than whole beans because there's so much more surface area exposed to air. If you can, buy whole beans and grind just before you brew.
4. Buy little and often
Coffee is freshest in the weeks after roasting. Because we roast to order, buying smaller amounts more regularly means you're always drinking coffee at its peak. Aim to finish a bag within three to four weeks of opening.
